    Aria and Kai are AI voice companions. They are not humans. They do not have feelings, memories, or a physical body. Every word they say is generated in real time by computer software.
  

The short version

When you call 1 Call Away, you're talking to artificial intelligence — not a person.
Aria and Kai are designed to sound warm and natural. That's intentional. But they are still software.
If you directly ask during a call whether you're talking to a real person, Aria or Kai will tell you the truth.
Nothing they say should be taken as medical, legal, or financial advice.
This service is not a substitute for therapy, friendship, or professional care.

How Aria and Kai actually work

Three pieces of technology, running in real time:

Speech recognition — your voice becomes text.
A large language model (currently Claude Sonnet 4.6 by Anthropic) generates a reply based on a written personality and the context of the conversation.
Text-to-speech (ElevenLabs) turns that reply back into the voice you hear.

The round trip happens fast enough to feel like a natural conversation. It is still, in every case, a machine pattern-matching on language — not a person who knows you.

Help you think out loud about something on your mind

What they cannot do

Crisis support. If you are in a mental health crisis or considering harming yourself, please call or text 988 — the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, free, 24/7. If you are in immediate physical danger, call 911.
Medical, legal, or financial advice. For these, please speak with a licensed professional.
Remember you. Each call starts fresh. Nothing carries over from one call to the next.
Always be right. AI can get things wrong, sound confident when it shouldn't, and occasionally say something strange. Treat what you hear as conversation, not as fact.

What happens to what you say

Your voice is transcribed and processed in real time by our infrastructure partner (Vapi, who uses ElevenLabs for voice and Anthropic for language generation) so that Aria or Kai can respond. We do not record audio. We do not store transcripts.

A word about emotional attachment

Some callers find themselves looking forward to talking to Aria or Kai. That's understandable — they're designed to be good listeners. We want to be straight with you:

They do not remember you between calls.
They do not have feelings about you, positive or negative.
They are not a replacement for human connection, friendship, family, or professional care.

Use this service as one tool — a place to think out loud, decompress, or not feel alone at 3am. It works best alongside the people and professionals in your life, not instead of them.
